We build Data Energy Centers®. We focus on integrating data centers with the local energy demands, utilizing heat re-usage and grid balancing technologies to share energy with the community we deploy in - Data Energy Centers®. We typically build in the range of 10 to 50 MW, allowing us to support both the energy transition and digital revolution together. Often we provide heat to a local district heating network and support to the power grid.
In light of the rapid advancement of AI technologies, and the need for more data centers to support AI systems, here are common questions we hear most often, and the answers we can provide.
-
Therma Loop is a privately owned Swedish company. We design, own and operate data centers that are part of the local energy system. We call them Data Energy Centers®.
-
Almost everything we do today runs out of a data center: apps on our phones, software on our computers, payments and banking, healthcare and, more and more, AI. As our usage grows, our need for more data center capacity grows too. The more we store, automate, and integrate, the more integral data centers are to ensuring smooth operation of our lives. And we want to build it in a way that also benefits the local energy system.
-
We look for sites with access to renewable electricity, appropriate land, internet connectivity, and a place that can use our waste heat, for example in cooperation with a district heating company. We build where the municipality and local energy companies can work with us, to make a better solution.
-
Computers and servers produce heat. Instead of wasting this energy and blowing it into the atmosphere or flushing it into a river, we send the heat energy to a district heating network, where the energy is used to heat homes and buildings. How much heat we can deliver depends on the local network and our agreement with the local energy provider, but we strive to re-use it all.
-
No, in fact we use very little water. Our cooling/heating systems runs in a closed loop system, so water is re-used. If we have a situation when heat cannot be used, we operate a system using dry coolers that release the heat without using water.
-
Cooling equipment and backup generators do make some sound. We follow the country’s, the region, and the municipalities guidelines for noise pollution. We also try to think smart, and place the noisiest equipment as far as possible from homes and offices and use preventive measures as needed. The electricity generators only run for short periods in the case of a power outage, or short test period.
-
Yes. Like other high quality data centers, we need backup power in case of a power outage. Our generators run on renewable fuel sources (ex. HVO100). They are used during power outages, during control tests, and when the power grid needs extra support. In general, they run for only a limited number of hours per year.
-
Yes, and this is a big part of what makes us Data Energy Centers®. Our battery systems and backup generators are there to keep the data center running, but they can also support the grid when it needs extra capacity. That way the data center becomes a resource for the local energy system, not just a user of it. We help limit power outages and the causes behind them.
-
We apply for a grid connection in the same way as any other business, and the grid company decides what the grid can handle. Because our sites are adapted for the local energy demands and can support the grid, they are easier to fit into the local system.
-
Yes. A data center is often staffed around the clock by operations personnel with different skills. We will share more about the number of jobs as each project is launched.
-
Step by step: finding a site, talking to the municipality and energy companies, designing a fitting energy solution, obtaining environmental permitting and build permitting, and more. Only when all puzzle pieces are ready do we take a final investment decision. A project can change along the way.
We will share news and make key announcements as we reach important milestones.
